Min dansk learning journey (so far)

Ever since I expressed interest in learning Danish (even before moving here), I’ve been getting the same advice over and over again:

“You need to watch children’s TV shows!”

I’ve been putting it off for a bit, learning with DuoLingo and at the free classes provided to new Danish residents (which are available for anyone who moved here – international students, immigrants, etc). I know now that I definitely speak Danish at an A1 level (😤💯) because I passed Modul 1 at UCPlus.

I decided today is the day. Armed with some basic vocab, I searched the “Expats in Copenhagen” facebook group (please don’t judge me, ik facebook is icky lol) for some advice. Several comments guided me to dr.dk. In the dropdown menu in the top right corner, I found something called DR Lær (DR Learn). Sounds interesting. I scrolled to something that looked promising, “Børste og vuggestuen,” which had a little hedgehog guy. Looks like a kid’s show. I translated the title, which means “Brush and the nursery.”

Børste is an excellent name for a hedgehog.

Anyway, I’ve watched some episodes and I understood a lot more than I expected. It was exactly the confidence boost I needed. Also, I learned some essential vocabulary like “middagslur” which means mid day nap.

I feel like DuoLingo gave me a pretty good foundation to build upon. I’m going to try to watch as much Danish baby TV as possible, and will update you in the future on my progress!

DR.dk has some free options to choose from, and I’m excited to try the different shows that they have!

Vi ses snart,

Bella
